Never Too Late: Why Go Back to College When You’re Over 40?

Many baby boomers today are trying to find ways in which they can make a difference in the world — regardless of their age. Some people have been looking for something to occupy their time, while others are looking for things that can keep them mentally challenged. Regardless of why, many people have come up with a great idea – going back to college later in life.

According to various studies, it is known that Baby Boomers (or those born between the years of 1946 and 1964) are the most educated generation. But they're not getting their education all at once in their early 20s, they have become lifelong learners. Many baby boomers nowadays are applying to colleges and universities even if they are in their retirement years. Learning doesn’t stop with age — in reality, it actually grows with it. If you’re over 40, some of the following reasons to go back to school might strike a chord:

Do Something You’ve Never Done Before. Due to the constantly developing educational system, there are many new courses that have emerged. These are not the same old college courses you knew when you were 20. There is much more variety now, especially at the community college level. If you’re one who wants to try something uniquely different from what you’ve been doing for the majority of your life, enroll in a college course that sparks your interest.

More Knowledge Means More Money. Learning something new (or actively learning what you already know) may give you a higher chance of bagging a job that can get you a higher salary. Oftentimes, Baby Boomers go on to earn a Masters, PhD, or complete other graduate courses to help them add more value to their resume or more dollars in their paychecks.

Change is Good. Some people initially embarked on a career they weren’t entirely happy about because they didn't really know what kind of career they wanted. Learning something new in college is a second chance at a career that interests them. Now they get to learn something they actually enjoy with no limitations whatsoever.

Engage in Successful New Ventures. Learning new things is good for you mentally; you get to keep on your toes by learning, thinking, and stretching your brain. This helps you stay young and alert. You also get to socialize with others and this will help ward off depression.

Educating yourself may be the start of something new and successful in your life. It could also help you earn more income. Going back to college even though you're no longer in your 20s should be seen as a whole new, exciting phase of your life.
