Six Tips for Staying Well this Cold and Flu Season

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Check out these tips from Dr. David Berger, a Board Certified Pediatrician and national speaker on medical topics including nutrition and the use of supplements in health for children and adults.

1. Wash up: Regularly clean hands with soap and warm water for 30 seconds to banish germs. A waterless hand sanitizer is also great in a pinch.

2. Vitamin D: It is important to get Vitamin D levels checked regularly. Ask your practitioner to run a 25 HydroxyVitamin D Blood Level . An optimal Vitamin D level is greater than 50ng/ml. If you are unable to find a practitioner who tests Vitamin D levels Dr. Berger recommends adults take 5000iu daily of vitamin D3 and children take 1000iu per 25lbs of the child.

3. Boost immunity: The immune system is your bodyguard against viruses. If you are already taking vitamins to improve your immune response to current exposure risks, consider taking a supplement that has been quality and purity tested beyond FDA requirements and against the highest standards in industry, like the Ultra Tested™ products from Kirkman®.

a. Examples of Kirkman Ultra Tested immune support products include Immuno-Aid, Beta Glucan, Super Cranberry Extra and Grapefruit Seed Extract (see below press release for more information).

4. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water actually allows the immune system’s natural mechanisms to function better. Beverages like herbal teas and clear soup broths also count towards your goal of eight glasses a day.

5. Get some ZZzzs: Sleep allows the body to restore itself, an important part of staying healthy.

6. Avoid contact with sick people: Since this is not always possible due to a sick child or spouse, try to minimize the damage by diligently cleaning anything a sick person may have used, like phones, keyboards, door knobs, cabinet handles and remote controls.

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

The key to having an affordable day spa at home is to prepare for your day first. Get a pair of comfortable slippers. If you do not have slippers, a comfortable pair of socks – or even your bare feet – will do. Get into a robe or lounge clothes. Take a nice warm shower before you begin your at home spa day. If you are planning to do facial masks, hand, or feet treatments get all items, bowls, and towels ready.

1. Use Therapeutic Ingredients You Already Have at Home

One affordable way to enjoy a spa day at home is to find everyday ingredients you have in your kitchen. You can go online and find simple recipes for a facial mask such as, the chocolate facial, oatmeal facial, honey facial, or even an avocado facial. There are so many different types of facials out there just choose the one that you think best suits your needs.

2. Soak in a Warm Oatmeal Bath

Along with your facial, you can soak in a warm oatmeal bath. Oatmeal baths are an affordable way to relax and at the same time it will moisturize dry skin. Simply pour a cup of ground-up oatmeal into your warm bath water and make sure you mix is well before you get in. Soak in the bath for 30 minutes or longer. After, rinse off in the shower.

3. Try a DIY Mani-Pedi

A third affordable at home day spa tip is do-it-yourself pedicure or manicure. Again, you can go online and find a hand or foot treatment you can make with ingredients you have on hand. After your treatments, trim your nails, file them down, and put on one of your favorite nail polishes. Pedicures and manicures, whether you do them or someone else does, are a good way to make you feel better; a self esteem booster.

4. Make Your Own In-Home Sauna

Also, to add to your affordable at home day spa you can turn on the shower and sink as hot as you can get them to steam up the room and make your own sauna at home. Read a book or listen to some soft music as you relax. This also helps open up your pores and is very refreshing.

5. Nourish Yourself

Eat a healthy meal. This is another way to benefit from a good day of an at home day spa. Fish, baked chicken, or something as simple as a salad is a good way to start. Healthy doesn’t mean you cannot eat good tasting food. Instead of indulging in chips and sweets, try fruit or vegetables and dip. A nice grilled steak with a baked potato or salad is a healthy way to enjoy a good meal on your at home spa day.

There are a variety of different ideas you can use to have an affordable at home spa day. The best thing is to use what you already have at home. You can even go as far as to having a boyfriend or husband give you a massage with warm lotion. At home spa days are a relaxing, affordable way to pamper yourself.
